1. Who is Eligible to Vote?

You MUST be registered 30-days before any election in which you wish to vote.

Michigan uses the SAME address for BOTH driver's licenses & voter registration — the most-current address on file w/the state determines WHERE you vote

  • Age — 18 years old (by the date of the election in which you want to vote)
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Residency — resident of Michigan & of city you are registering to vote in.

PROBLEM: Students living away from home often have 2 addresses, but the state of MI only allows 1 address to be used for both your License & Voter Reg. & this “principal address” determines your polling location — where you vote.

SOLUTION: choose the primary/”principal” address close to where you actually reside & specify a separate mailing address :

  • Use your campus address, as your “principal” address — for voting purposes
  • Specify a different mailing address (parent’s home address, etc.) — for mail purposes

  • First Time Voters & those w/Enhanced Driver’s License use…
PDF form – Voter Registration & Separate Mailing address— can be done in-person (at an SOS branch), or by snail-mail
  • Returning Voters can use either…
Online – Update your Voter Registration & Separate Mailing Addressif you have never voted, or have an Enchanced Driver’s License this option is not available online
  •  MI residents in jail or prison who are awaiting arraignment or trial ARE ELIGIBLE to vote.
  •   MI residents serving a sentence in jail or prison ARE NOT ELIGIBLE to vote.
  •  MI residents who have been released from jail or prison after serving out their sentence ARE ELIGIBLE to vote
  • — does NOT matter if you are on probation or parole.
